Getting Started in Three Easy Steps
1 - Reach out
Fill out the contact form. A parent, guardian, or adult family member can reach out to get the process started.
2 - Get matched
Our office administrator will pair you with the counselor whose training and availability fit your family. For family work, that is often our Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
3 - Get Started!
Your first session is a conversation, not an interrogation. You will talk about what brought you in and what you want to be different.
What is Family Therapy?
Family therapy is counseling where the relationship is the client, not just the person who seems to be having the hardest time.
That might be a parent and a four-year-old who cannot get through bedtime without a meltdown. It might be parents who want a calmer, more consistent way to handle a ten-year-old or a teen. It might be a 35-year-old and their mom or dad who love each other but cannot talk without the same old fight starting up.
At every age, the problem rarely lives in one person. It shows up in how everyone talks, argues, and makes up. Your counselor looks at those patterns with you instead of handing anyone the blame.
Family therapy at Grateful Heart is led by our Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), a counselor whose license and training are specifically in how families and relationships work.
Sessions are a mix of the whole family together, parents on their own, and sometimes one-on-one time, depending on what your family needs.
Families Come to Us When
Every evening turns into a battle over screens, homework, or bedtime
Your preschooler’s tantrums are running the household and nothing you try sticks
You want to parent with more calm and less yelling, but do not know where to start
Your teen has stopped talking to you and you do not know how to get back in
You and your co-parent are not on the same page about rules or discipline
A divorce, a remarriage, or a blended family has everyone on edge
You and your adult child, or your parent, have drifted apart or stopped speaking
The same old argument comes up every holiday and nobody knows how to stop it
You and your siblings need to make decisions about an aging parent together
A loss, a move, or a diagnosis changed things and nobody knows how to talk about it
If any of this sounds familiar, family therapy may be a good next step.

-
50 to 60 minutes, usually weekly to start.
-
There is no fixed number. Some people come for a few months around a specific problem, others stay longer. Your counselor will help you figure out what makes sense for your goals, and you are free to stop anytime and come back later.
-
We try to get your first appointment scheduled within a week from when you call. Some of our Therapists offer appointments in the early morning, evenings, or on Saturdays to try to accommodate your schedule.
-
Mostly listening. Your counselor will ask about your history, what is going on now, and what you want to be different. You are not expected to have it all organized in your head beforehand.
-
-
Yes, with the legal limits every licensed counselor in Texas operates under, which your counselor will explain clearly in the first session.
-
No. Some sessions are the whole family, some are just parents, and some are one-on-one. For adult families, it often starts with one person. Your counselor will suggest a mix based on what is going on.
-
Neither. The goal is a relationship that works better for everyone, and each person needs to feel heard for that to happen.
-
PCIT is designed for children as young as 2 and up to age 7.
-
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is a coaching program for parents of children ages 2 to 7. You play with your child while your therapist coaches you live. The first phase builds warmth and connection; the second teaches calm, consistent ways to give directions and follow through. Parents practice for about five minutes a day at home, and most families finish in a few months.
-
No. A class gives everyone the same material. Here, your counselor works with your actual kids, your actual routines, and the moments that keep going sideways, using Love and Logic principles and adjusting as you go.
-
Yes. Adult children and their parents are one of the types of families we see. Sessions can include just you, you and your parent, or other family members when the time is right.
-
That is common, whether it is a teen or an adult. Many families start with whoever is willing. Change in one person often shifts the whole pattern, and others tend to join once they see it is not about blaming them.
-
We are in-network with several major insurance panels. Lower-cost sessions are available with our associate and pre-licensed counselors.
-
Family therapy cannot be done virtually. However, our Therapists can have one-on-one meetings virtually, when needed.
