Getting Started in Three Easy Steps
1 - Reach out
Fill out the contact form; you do not need to explain everything, just enough for us to reach out and to point you in the right direction.
2 - Get matched
Our office administrator will pair you with the counselor whose specialty and availability fit what you need. If you already know who you want to see, let us know.
3 - Get Started!
Your first session is a conversation, not an interrogation. You will talk about what brought you in and the goals you want to achieve.
What is A.R.T.?
A.R.T. is not art therapy. It has nothing to do with drawing, painting, or creative media. The name is an acronym for Accelerated Resolution Therapy.
A.R.T. is a brief, evidence-based therapy that helps people resolve trauma and emotional distress in a gentle, directive way. It uses guided eye movements alongside imagery techniques. You hold a distressing image in mind, and your counselor guides you through replacing it with something you choose. The facts of what happened do not change. How the memory is stored, and what it does to you when it surfaces, does.
The directive part matters: your counselor leads the structure of the session rather than waiting for you to find your way there. For a lot of people, that is a relief.
You will not be asked to describe painful details out loud. This is often the deciding factor for people who have avoided trauma therapy entirely. Most people only need one to three A.R.T. sessions to work through one distressing event, and each session lasts about an hour.
We use A.R.T. for trauma, anxiety, depression, phobias, intrusive thoughts, physical pain, and unresolved emotional pain. A.R.T. is currently offered at our Justin office.

Both use eye movements, and both help the brain reprocess distressing memories. A.R.T. is more directive and typically shorter, and it places more emphasis on replacing the distressing image rather than working through it. Your counselor can help you decide which fits best for you.
