How Teen Therapy Works

Happy Adult Female Representing Talk Therapy

You love your teenager, and you know they can get through this rough time. They just need some support. We would be honored to be that safe person for your teen to lean on.

We love working with teenagers to help them learn how to manage their anxiety, set healthy boundaries, change their negative thought patterns, address their school struggles, and value the amazing individual they are. We also provide education and support for teenagers struggling with ADHD, self-harm, low self-esteem, unhealthy friendship patterns, and family changes.

Teenagers can spot fake from a mile away. Our counselors do not open with a worksheet and a clipboard. The first job is credibility: showing up as an adult who is not there to report back, judge, or fix them. We spend several sessions building an honest, trusting relationship and getting to know them.

From there the work is practical. We use approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and DBT-informed skills to help them recognize what their brain is doing, interrupt the spiral, and handle conflict, pressure, and self-criticism with actual tools.

Sessions are one on one and run 50 to 55 minutes. We start with weekly sessions and can step down to every other week as your teen makes progress. Confidentiality is explained clearly to both the teen and the parent up front, including its limits, because a teenager will not open up until they know exactly what is and is not shared.

We work on anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, conflict with friends, conflict at home, academic pressure, identity and life changes, grief, trauma, emotional regulation, self-harm, setting boundaries, and stress.

  • Their grades dropped and nobody can say exactly why

  • They have pulled away from friends they used to be close to

  • They struggle with anger, isolation, or tears with no obvious trigger

  • Their sleep is wrecked, either too much or almost none

  • They said something that scared you

  • They are anxious about things that used to be easy

Ashley Smith - Owner, LPC, RPT

Hi, I’m Ashley! I am the owner of Grateful Heart Counseling and we are here to help your family navigate through life's many challenges.

Whether it's anxiety creeping in, low self-esteem holding you back, or difficult changes happening around you, we can help you gain the skills and self confidence to overcome these obstacles.

Our counselors are trained in multiple evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and for younger kids- the transformative power of Play Therapy. Together, we can start your journey towards healing and growth.

Ashley has helped equip me with tools for parenting my son who went through a major change in his life. She listened, took time to give me materials, and helped me feel supported as the parent. I would recommend her for parents who have a child needing emotional support!
