Kaitlin Barbati, LCSW-S
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Board-Approved Supervisor.
Specialties: I specialize in helping adults (18+) who are ready to receive support for experiences with trauma or PTSD. I have many years of experience working with those who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault or abuse, depressive disorders, and anxiety, as well as adults who experienced child abuse and neglect.
I offer in-person and virtual counseling options for your convenience.
Approaches: I am trained in the highly sought-after modalities of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I use these therapeutic modalities along with other evidence-based practices, such as CBT and DBT, to tailor my approach based on each client's unique needs and strengths.
I place a heavy emphasis on learning to embrace self-compassion and kindness to self throughout the therapeutic process. As human beings, our brains are wired to develop coping skills and defense mechanisms, including shame and rigidity, to match the intensity of our adverse experiences. This quote demonstrates what the process of safely untangling that could look like in the therapy space. I believe that part of my job as a therapist is to hold unconditional positive regard for my clients so that, when they're ready, they can start embracing it for themselves as well. The last piece of the quote, "Someone did that for me," speaks to the importance of not only community support from others who have been where the client currently is, but also allows some appropriate self disclosure from the therapist - I know firsthand the importance of having a safe, therapeutic space to celebrate my whole self.
"You are beloved and beautiful.
Maybe you can't believe that,
but I will hold it here until you can.
Someone did that for me."
-Jeff Chu for Survivor Love Letter
Experience: I have gained experience in several roles throughout my career, including those in residential and nonresidential services for survivors of violence and abuse, an outpatient psychiatric hospital, school-based therapy, and private practice. Now I work with adults navigating life's struggles and learning how to embrace their most authentic selves.
